Barwon Proud creates safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces for LGBTQIA+ people across the Barwon region — Geelong, Surf Coast, Colac Otway, and Queenscliff.
Everyone Deserves to Feel Seen, Safe, and Celebrated
Every person deserves to feel seen, safe, and celebrated close to home. At Barwon Proud, we believe that no one should have to travel far to find acceptance, support, or a sense of belonging.
We work alongside locals, councils, health services, and community partners to grow visibility, support, and equality across our region. Together, we're building a future where LGBTQIA+ people can live authentically and thrive in every corner of the Barwon area.
From advocacy and education to celebration and connection, we're here for every day that someone needs to know they're not alone.
Our Story
Barwon Proud was born from a simple truth, everyone deserves to feel seen, safe, and celebrated close to home. Across the Barwon region, from Geelong to Colac, the Surf Coast to Queenscliff — many LGBTQIA+ people have long faced fewer safe spaces, patchy support, and limited visibility. We saw the gap, and we decided to do something about it.
What began as a small group of passionate volunteers with a big dream has grown into a thriving not-for-profit organisation dedicated to advocacy, inclusion, and celebration. Barwon Proud is a grassroots movement built by the community, for the community.
We're creating a future where every LGBTQIA+ person in our region can live authentically, access the support they need, and belong to a vibrant community that genuinely has their back. Together with allies, councils, health providers, and community partners, we're building the foundations of a proud, connected Barwon region, one that stands up for equality and champions diversity in all its beautiful forms.
As a new organisation, Barwon Proud is starting with essential services, laying a strong foundation, and will continue to grow based on the evolving needs of our community. Our current offerings are designed to provide immediate support and foster connection:

Acknowledgement of Country
Barwon Proud acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather and thrive — the Wadawurrung, Gadubanud, and Eastern Marr peoples. We honor their deep connection to this land, waters, and culture, which has endured for thousands of years.
As we work to create an inclusive and supportive community for all LGBTQIA+ individuals in the Barwon Region, we recognize the importance of standing in solidarity with First Nations peoples. We are inspired by their resilience, strength, and commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
In fostering a space where everyone can express their true selves, we commit to learning from the wisdom and traditions of First Nations peoples, promoting a shared future that celebrates diversity and unity. Together, we strive to cultivate a community that honors our collective histories, embraces our differences, and empowers all individuals to flourish in their authentic identities.
